If you’ve changed your mind after choosing to abort, it might not be too late. The abortion pill reversal works if you’ve only taken the first drug, mifepristone. You do, however, need to reach out to your healthcare provider right away.

The abortion pill reversal may make it possible to continue your pregnancy. Contact the Abortion Pill Rescue Network’s 24/7 Helpline at 1-877-558-0333 to get help straight away.

How The Abortion Pill Reversal Works

A medical abortion involves two drugs taken at separate times: mifepristone and misoprostol.

Mifepristone, the drug you may have already taken, works by blocking progesterone, which is the hormone your body needs to sustain a pregnancy. The second drug, misoprostol, is taken 1 to 2 days later and causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy through cramping and bleeding.

The abortion pill reversal works by introducing supplemental progesterone into the body after mifepristone has been taken. This progesterone helps to restore the progesterone levels that the mifepristone blocked, helping the pregnancy continue.

Studies show pregnancy continuation rates of approximately 64 to 68% when APR is started early, and show no increase in birth defects. It’s important to remember outcomes can vary and cannot be guaranteed.

Progesterone has been used for more than 50 years in pregnancy care for women with a history of miscarriage or pregnancy loss.

Why Timing Matters

Timing is important if the APR is to be successful. The reversal is most effective if started within 24 hours of taking mifepristone, but some protocols can allow up to 72 hours or more, depending on your circumstances.

Starting the abortion pill reversal as soon as you can gives you the best chances of success, but outcomes do vary and cannot be guaranteed. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you are considering an APR.
