Emotions can change after taking the first abortion pill. What initially felt like the right decision may later raise concerns or create a sense of urgency.

If you’ve taken mifepristone and are now questioning what to do next, you’re not alone. In some situations, there may still be time to reverse the effects of the abortion pill through Abortion Pill Reversal (APR), a protocol with a 64-68% success rate.

If you’ve taken the first abortion pill and have questions about Abortion Pill Reversal, contact Sumter Pregnancy Center as soon as possible to learn what options or next steps may be available.

You can also contact the 24/7 Abortion Pill Reversal helpline or call 877.558.0333.

How Abortion Pill Reversal Works

A medical abortion, often referred to as an abortion pill, involves two drugs taken in sequence.

The first drug, mifepristone, works by blocking progesterone, a hormone essential for supporting pregnancy. The second drug, misoprostol, is taken 24 to 48 hours later and causes uterine contractions to expel the pregnancy.

Abortion Pill Reversal focuses on the period after mifepristone has been taken but before misoprostol. The protocol involves administering progesterone to counteract the effects of mifepristone. APR is time-sensitive, and available research suggests it may be most effective when started 24 to 48 hours after taking the first pill.

However, even if it’s been 72 hours or longer or you have taken misoprostol, there’s always a chance that the abortion pill didn’t work, especially if you are later in your pregnancy.

Monitoring, Safety, and Support

Progesterone has been used in pregnancy care for over 50 years, including in cases of threatened miscarriage. During APR, some women may experience spotting or mild bleeding, which can occur even when the pregnancy continues. Seek emergency medical care immediately if you experience heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, dizziness or fainting, or a fever.

Available research examining progesterone treatment has not shown an increased risk of birth defects. The sooner progesterone is administered, the better the chance of success.
