Every surgical and medical procedure has risks and side effects.
Abortion is no exception. Whether it is a medical abortion (i.e., the abortion pill) or a surgical procedure, abortion can affect you physically.
Before you consider abortion, there are facts you need to know. First, are you sure that you are pregnant?
Our team at Sumter Pregnancy Center can provide you with the information you need. We will offer a free medical-grade pregnancy test and, if you qualify, a free and confidential ultrasound.
How Can a Medical Abortion Affect You?
A medical abortion, also known as the abortion pill, consists of two drugs taken 24-48 hours apart.
The first drug, mifepristone, blocks the hormone progesterone, causing the pregnancy to end. The second drug, misoprostol, triggers the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy and tissue through abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding.
Side effects from a medical abortion can include upset stomach, vomiting, fever, chills, diarrhea, and headache.
Women experience varying levels of pain during the procedure, and the provider may provide medication to manage it.
There’s also a chance of experiencing a complication. Read more about the risks of abortion here.
How Can a Surgical Abortion Affect You?
One type of surgical procedure is called a dilation and curettage abortion (D&C). In a D&C, instruments or medication dilate the cervix (opening of the uterus), and a provider uses a sharp instrument or suction device called a curette to remove the pregnancy and related tissue.
Side effects can include light bleeding or spotting and mild cramping, which can last for a few days after the procedure.
While risks are rare with a D&C, it’s essential to be aware of them before selecting this option.
One risk to note is Asherman’s syndrome, which is when scar tissue develops inside the uterus. This condition can lead to absent or painful periods, future miscarriages, and infertility. However, surgical treatment is available.
