If you’re facing an unplanned pregnancy and considering abortion, it’s essential to learn all you can so that you can make an informed, confident decision. There are two main types of abortion: medical and surgical.

Medical Abortion
Medical abortion, also known as the “abortion pill,” is a combination of two drugs that work together to terminate and then expel the pregnancy through the vagina. These drugs are only FDA-approved for pregnancies under 10 weeks—which is why it’s vital to receive an ultrasound to find out the age of your pregnancy before seeking this type of abortion.
These drugs are taken at home, which means you will experience any side effects or risks without the supervision of a physician.
After taking the drugs, you will have vaginal bleeding and feel abdominal cramping. You might also experience the following side effects:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Fever
- Chills
- Diarrhea
- Headache
Although risks are less likely, they are more severe and include:
- Incomplete abortion, which may need to be followed by surgical abortion
- An ongoing pregnancy if the procedure doesn’t work
- Heavy and prolonged bleeding
- Infection
- Fever
- Digestive system discomfort
Medical abortion isn’t recommended for everyone. If you have certain medical histories or are on various medications, this type of abortion might be riskier. This is why it’s essential to speak with a qualified medical provider before seeking a medical abortion.
Surgical Abortion
Surgical abortion is typically done later in pregnancy when medical abortion is no longer an option. This type of abortion involves dilating the cervix so that medical instruments can enter the uterus to remove the pregnancy. These instruments can include curettage tools, which scrape the uterine lining, as well as vacuuming instruments that utilize harsh suction to pull out the pregnancy.
After a surgical abortion, you will experience abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding. The risks of surgical abortion include:
- Perforation of the uterus. This occurs when a surgical instrument pokes a hole in the uterus.
- Damage to the cervix
- Scar tissue on the uterine wall
- Infection
